Nizam Dastghayb Shirazi

Nizam Dastghayb Shirazi, Mir Nizam al-Din (d. 1794), son of Mir Amin al-Din Husayn. A calligrapher, poet with the nom de plume Nizam, a sayyid from Shiraz, well-known as Nizam Dastghayb. He learned different disciplines in his prime of life and also attained mastery of music and writing in the nasta’liq. Having studied poetry under Amir Mhammad Mu’min ‘Izzi Firuzabadi, he became a skillful poet and made a name for himself. He was a contemporary of Nasrabadi (b. 1672). Nizam died in Shiraz and was laid to rest beside the tomb of Hafiz. According to some biographical sources, he died in his youth under Shah ‘Abbas II (1642-1666). It is reported in some biographical works that he traveled to India and died in 1629. His works include his Divan of poetry, comprising of poetical compositions in the forms of saqinama, ghazal, qasida, tarji’, and tarkib, running to about 3,000 to 4,000 couplets collected by a certain Hayyan Mali to which the latter wrote an introduction.
