Mas‘ud Farzad
Farzad, Mas’ud (1906-1981), son of Habib Allah. A poet, writer, researcher, translator, university professor, and editor from Sanandaj, Kurdestan. Having settled in Tehran with his family, he received his primary education and entered Dar al-Funun, where he acquired a good knowledge of English. He found an employment as a translator at the Ministry of Finance. He was sent to London to study Economics in 1929. Upon his return, he served as a translator at the Foreign Ministry and taught English at Officers’ College and Dar al-Funun. Having departed for London again, he was invited by the BBC where he worked as a newscaster for a few months. Following his return to Iran, he taught at the University of Shiraz. He traveled to London for medical treatment where he died. He took up his poetical career at the age of eleven. He attended some of the sessions held by Kanun-i Danish-i Pars and Anjuman-i Hidayat from 1967. He also contributed his literary articles to different periodicals, like Mihr, Yaghma, Farhang u Hunar, Tamasha, Talash, Ittila’at, and Kayhan. He received an honorary doctorate degree for his critical edition of the Diwan of Hafiz. A friend of Sadiq Hidayat, they co-authored Wagh Wagh Sahab. His works also include Kuh-i Tanha’i; Bazm-i Dard; Gul-i Gham; Diwan-i Shi’r; Murtadd; translations of Ru’ya-yi Sitara and Dawari-yi Mahabbat.
